Don’t Be Blue!

Harmful Blue Lights are a Wellness Problem We Can Overcome with Radiant Infrared & Red-Light Sauna Sessions

Only three decades ago, a researcher at Harvard University discovered that light photons govern our internal clocks. Before that, we were blissfully unaware that lightbulbs and TVs could be affecting our sleep patterns and overall health. Fast-forward to today, where the blue-light photons from cell phones, tablets, inefficient lighting, TVs and computers have become a large part of our day and in effect, are eating away at our health. So, how do we counter this? With whole-body heat systems (i.e., Thermal PODS, IR Saunas) that include red-light and near-infrared photons of course.

Modern “screen time” is primarily made up of blue light. These can be beneficial during the daylight hours to boost attention and reaction times, but at night, it’s way too much. Blue-light photons disrupt and reduce our melatonin neurotransmitters causing “hyper” circadian problems and sleep problems, which lead to a serious increase of chronic health problems. The common overabundance of blue-light photons combined with today’s damaging sedentary lifestyle is a losing, double-down hand that is wreaking havoc on our overall wellness.

To understand this better, we need to know the science behind the lights. Kelvin is the scale used to measure the color temperature of a light source. Blue light has the highest Kelvin temperature of around 5,000K or higher, while red lights and near-infrared red photons have a lower temperature of around 2,000K-3,000K. In 2016, the American Medical Association noted that, “blue spectrum light more than 3,000K (from our bulbs and screens) has a serious circadian impact on human health. This sleep disruption can increase the risk of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity.”

What we’ve learned is that our bodies are overwhelmed by the increase of blue light that affects our overall health.

On the other hand, radiant holistic infrared heat increases our metabolism, and red light has a lower wavelength which stimulates our cells ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate) which is the energy that fuels our cells and ultimately helps counter the modern imbalance of artificial blue light photons. This is how NASA research proved controlled heat and red lights help to heal wounds faster and lasers are commonly used for enhancing aesthetic procedures. Simply put, red-light photons enhance health and rejuvenation.

Using these scientific red-light and hyperthermic studies combined with the numerous studies on radiant near- and far-infrared heat, has helped wellness professionals better understand how to use holistic energies for improving wellness, whole-body anti-aging, better sleep and better balance of brain chemistry for relaxation and better mental acuity. Traditionally, infrared sauna companies have put a single “chromotherapy” light in their sauna cabins that rotates between seven colors. We know now, more than ever, that colorful but harsh LED lights aren’t good for total relaxation and wellness. The research has generally shown that red LED lights are the key trigger in creating the soft ambiance that delivers helpful serenity and wellness to counter the horde of blue lights that invades and disrupts our daily lives.

In fact, using a near-infrared POD or sauna together with serene red lights can help counteract the blue light you’ve been inundated with for the entire day. According to an article published by Harvard Medical School in 2018, they recommend, “Use dim red lights for night lights. Red light has the least power to help shift circadian rhythm and suppress melatonin.” And remember, more melatonin is better for sleep, since it’s the natural chemical our bodies need to produce to fall asleep better – and it is suppressed by blue light.

What we know is that the more we advance in technology, the more we realize what is good for our health and what is bad. What we’ve learned is that our bodies are overwhelmed by the increase of blue light that affects our overall health. Fortunately, we now understand that natural energies can counteract this, such as that found in infrared saunas with serene red lights that calm and help promote a better night’s sleep – for better health and wellness.
